Hand-carved bone Maori style pendant, shaped like a fish hook – ‘Hei Matau’ in Maori. Enhanced with complex traditional binding.

The Maori people of New Zealand are great mariners and fishermen. The Matau is one of the most powerful symbols in Maori culture, as it represents prosperity, abundance and fertility. It is often worn by travellers because it is said to provide good luck and safety when travelling over water.

Includes a plaited waxed braid cord with hand-carved bone toggle, a traditional woven presentation case and a detailed description of the meaning of the carving.
